Emergency Tips for Handling Burst Pipe Water Coming Into Your Detroit Lakes Home

With the overall reach and complexity of your home’s plumbing system, you’re bound to run into trouble from time to time. Most situations are minor, like a small leak, while some are major, such as a burst water pipe. The latter can lead to significant water damage and mold growth in your home within 48 hours. It absolutely qualifies as an emergency.

As it gets incredibly cold here in Northern Minnesota, we tend to face broken and burst pipes more often than is normal. The cold causes even a small bit of water in the line to freeze and expand. With the pressure reaching upwards of 40,000 psi, it’s not long before the line bursts and you have water around your ankles.

What to Do After a Burst Pipe

We know, the last thing you want to handle alone is a burst pipe. While you wait for local restoration specialists to arrive, here are a few quick fixes to mitigate water damage.

  • Turn Off the Water — If you have ever noticed the speed in which you receive water from your faucet, you’ll realize that there is always water in the line waiting. If a pipe were to burst, the water would continue to flow. You need to shut off the water fast using either the supply valve or the main water shutoff valve.
  • Open a Nearby Faucet — Once you turn off the water, go to the nearest faucet to the burst pipe and open it up. Doing so will relieve the remaining pressure in the line and help cut off the flow of water.
  • Remove Standing Water — While you wait for a local restoration company, start to remove some of the standing water on your floor. You can use a mop or old towels to soak up what you can.
  • Drying Process — It’s also possible to begin the drying process. Start by turning up the heat or blasting the air conditioning system to eliminate moisture. Then, turn on overhead fans or standing fans — the more airflow the better.
  • Call Your Insurance — You’ll likely need to file an insurance claim with your provider to deal with the cleanup and repairs. Start the process early, as it can take some time for the insurance company to respond and accept your claim.
